The History of Weberding’s Carving Shop

In the Beginning…

William J. Weberding began carving around the age of six years old. He was given some chisels and wood by his father to occupy his time while recuperating from an appendectomy and pneumonia. His father had no idea this gift would turn into his son's life legacy.

William started his career as a wood carver by apprenticing at Romweber Furniture Company, while also making religious carvings in the evenings. In his spare time, William would visit local parishes to showcase his work to priests. As demand for his work increased, William founded Weberding’s Carving Shop in 1942 at the age of 25. His business grew from a 10’ x 12’ shed to a 22,000 square foot work space today.

William and his wife Monica had five children, three sons and two daughters. The three sons, William G. (Buzz), Terry, and Tim, began operation of the business upon Bill's retirement in 1981. William J. and Monica sadly passed in 2005 and 2009 respectively and are dearly missed by their family.

The Second Generation

The three brothers combined their many talents to continue making handcrafted furniture and religious fixtures, repairing and restoring statues, and carving ornamental pieces. William G., Terry, and Tim have all retired but continue to assist in the woodshop.

Looking Ahead

We at Weberding's Carving Shop pride ourselves on being a true family-owned and operated business. William J.'s grandson, Brian ( BJ), has followed in his grandfathers and fathers footsteps and has taken over managing the day to day operations.

Great-grandson, Brian Junior, plans to continue operation of Weberding's as a fourth generation woodworker.
