St. Louis Church- Batesville, Indiana

One of our biggest jobs right now, is St. Louis Church in Batesville, Indiana.  We are working on their Reredos wall.  Our goal is to take the Reredos wall back to the past and have it look like it did when it was dedicated on March 3, 1903.  It will have all new capitals, scallops and crockets, which will all have 22 kt. gold leaf applied to them.  There will be approximately 500 new parts added to the Reredos wall.  The inside wall will be completely repainted.  We recently added new pictures of what the Reredos currently looks like with the angels added to it.

Below, B.J. and Jake are hard at work applying 22 kt. gold leaf to some of the new pieces that will be added to the Reredos wall.  Gold leafing is an art in itself.  It takes a lot of time and patience to get this job done correctly.

The picture below is the center section of the Reredos wall and the highlight of this job.  There are wings that are to go on both sides of the center section.  If all goes according to plan, we hope to have the Reredos wall installed by First Communion on April 13, 2008.  90% of the work for the Reredos wall is being completed in our shop, so there will be no major change at the church until installation time.  The new Reredos wall is made possible by an individual who wanted her family to be remembered by a lasting piece of artwork.  What a generous gift to the St. Louis parish.

On the right is the tabernacle, which is where the Blessed Sacrament will be housed.  It is made out of 1/2" steel, weighing over 200 pounds.  The front of the tabernacle will have a polished bronze casting.

These angels that we are in the process of making, will be going under the arches next to the tabernacle on the Reredos wall.  We only have two more steps to finish these angels, which are to primer and then paint them.  As the pictures change, you can see the process of how we go about making a statue.  The angels are now completed and put in their rightful places on the Reredos wall.

Above, we are working on a number of statues for St. Louis Church.  This is the first time that the statues are being repainted after many years of candle smoke and age.  As the pictures above change, you will be able to see some of the process that we go through to refurbish a statue.  The first thing that we do to the statues, is power wash them to chip off all of the loose paint.  Then we patch them with spackling, sand them and then primer them.  Then we repeat the process a little bit and patch and sand them again.  The last thing we do is put on the base coat and 22 kt. gold leaf.  Hopefully, you will be able to see that there is a definite difference between the statues before we did any work on them, to the statues that we have finished already.

As the tallest part of the Reredos wall is being completed to the left, the scaffolding is slowly coming down and the statues are returning to their proper places.  Fr. Dennis climbs the scaffolding to see the progress up close.  Our next step is to install the center section of the Reredos wall, which we feel is the most stunning part of the whole project.
